This unique expert workshop will look at the problem of pharmaceutical contamination in the UK’s water supply.
Focused on Cornish businesses, it will consider the proposed upcoming legislative changes to the Water Framework Directive and give delegates an insight into current scientific understanding.
Speakers and delegates will also discuss the impacts of pharmaceutical pollution on the environment, and the opportunities and challenges that changes in the Water Framework Directive could present to the UK water industry.
Last year, the EU placed 3 pharmaceuticals – an anti-inflammatory drug and two components of the contraceptive pill – as substances on a ‘watch list’ requiring monitoring and reduction in discharges to the environment. The cost of compliance for the UK water industry to meet initial proposed Environmental Quality Standards for just one of these substances was recently estimated at over £20 billion.
As pharmaceutical use continues to rise, and pressures on society to minimise pollution increase, the water industry will need to find low cost solutions for removal of pharmaceuticals from aqueous waste streams.
This workshop will provide a number of industry perspectives on these proposed changes, and presents a great opportunity to find out how your business could be involved in addressing the issues.
