Pollen and its impact on human health

This project will investigate the impacts of different types of pollen on hospital admissions and human disease.

A key element of the study’s first phase will be to examine admission figures when levels of pollen are at their highest.

The research will then consider the effects that pollen related problems can have on hospital admissions for other diseases. These admissions commonly take place after the pollen peak and include:

  • Respiratory disease
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Hypertensive disease
  • Blood and immune system disorders
  • Psychiatric disorders

The Centre has partnered with the UK Met Office to conduct this project, which will use pollen data from 12 monitoring sites across the UK.
