We are exposed to countless man-made chemical contaminants throughout our lives and exposures to some (such as nanomaterials) have only just begun. This project will evaluate the evidence that contaminants within our bodies may be causing significant changes to patterns of disease.

Industrial chemicals allow us to sustain the global population and improve health and longevity. However, there is a growing body of evidence which suggests that chemicals may be influencing incidences of disease in the populations of both developed and developing countries.

This project will seek to address the following questions:

1. Do body burdens of environmental chemical contaminants influence acute and chronic diseases?
2. If so, to what extent?
3. Which groups of individuals are most vulnerable and why?
4. Will the ageing demographic and longer life expectancies worldwide result in higher body burdens of chemicals?
5. Will this change the patterns of disease nationally and internationally?
6. Which newly emerging chemicals should we be most concerned about?
