Joe Lillis

PhD student

  • Jl1108@exeter.ac.uk

Joe is an ESRC-funded PhD student with the Medical School. His research focuses on the environmental factors that, together, shape inequalities in mental health across society. Working with Public Health England, his research aims to identify key characteristics and combinations of local neighbourhoods that may benefit or harm mental wellbeing.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Conservation Ecology, an MSc in the Environment and Human health, and an MRes in Health and Wellbeing. However, these academic qualifications were earned sporadically over 15 years. In this time, Joe has set up and run his own small gardening business, and has worked in roles ranging from barman, to tree surgeon and forest school teacher.

Despite an unconventional route to academia, Joe is determined to gain valuable skills and experience whilst at the ECEHH – a place which has always been welcoming and inspirational.
