Dr Pamela Buchan is an interdisciplinary marine scientist whose work examines human–ocean relationships, identities and participation in environmental decision-making. She developed this focus through research on marine citizenship and coastal governance, alongside applied research and governance roles. Pamela combines qualitative and mixed-methods research, evidence synthesis and co-production to support more equitable, evidence-informed environmental policy and practice.
Pamela’s research examines how social science can strengthen environmental decision-making, from understanding human–ocean relationships and participation to improving how evidence is synthesised and used. Her interests include marine citizenship, social sustainability, place and identity, co-production and evidence-informed policy. As an ACCESS Leadership College Fellow, she works across research, policy and practice to support fairer environmental governance.
