Cara is a PhD student working on the impacts of pollution on antimicrobial resistance at the river catchment scale.

Based in the Centre’s labs at the University of Exeter’s Penryn campus, Cara’s research is supervised by Professor William Gaze, Dr Anne Leonard and Dr Andrew Singer (the latter from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology).

The aim of this research will be to quantify the main drivers of antimicrobial resistance in the environment, the exposure risk to humans, and the benefits of mitigation strategies. It is funded by the Medical Research Foundation and the University of Exeter.

Cara completed her MRes Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation in 2017, and BSc Biology in 2016, both at Imperial College London. There she conducted research on the effects of anthropogenic stress on the environment, particularly freshwaters.

Cara then went on to work at Imperial College London as a research assistant, and then as a laboratory and field technician.
