Exploring science with art

Posted on 8th January 2013

A new appointment at the European Centre will allow researchers to explore their work through the contrasting medium of art.

With the support of funding from The Leverhulme Trust, academics at the Centre will be working with resident artist Jonty Lees to help make environment and human health issues visible to a wider audience.

The collaboration will also explore the ways in which researchers at the Centre work together, and attempt to interpret how they embody their academic disciplines – or ‘walk the talk’ – in everyday life. The grant was secured by Dr Cassandra Phoenix and Dr Rebecca Moran.

Jonty Lees is a highly respected artist who works with sculpture, video, installation and performative techniques. He has an experimental approach to making art and recently completed a residency with Tate St. Ives in Cornwall.

As a result of his residency at the Centre, the artist is hoping to design and implement a number of exercises that will aid discussion and debate in the research process. Alongside the production of more tangible forms of artwork, a documentary about the experience of fusing scientific research with art is also planned.
