Posted on 9th May 2023

Research by the University of Exeter which shows how natural sounds can boost people’s wellbeing has formed part The Eden Project’s new ambitious digital campaign aimed at inspiring audiences worldwide to become part of nature, not apart from it.

Alex Smalley a Phd Fellow with ECEHH and the Wellcome Trust has contributed to a new three part podcast episodes entitled Conversations in the Canopy which sees Tod Coleman, part of Eden’s Explainers team, in conversations with experts focused connecting people with the natural world, including scientists, storytellers and psychologists.

For episode three, Tod takes a trek through the rich audio environment of Eden’s Rainforest Biome with Alex Smalley, to find out how natural sounds can help people to boost their wellbeing and reduce fatigue and stress. Alex explains,

“Spending time in nature is a rich multi-sensory experience, and listening to the sounds that surround us can be a really powerful way to connect with the natural world. From blackbirds to babbling brooks, ‘natural silence’ can help alleviate fatigue, improve mood, and provide people with a sense of calm.”
