Olivia North

PhD Student

  • on242@exeter.ac.uk
  • University profile

Olivia is a PhD student researching the link between climate change and violence, with an interest in prediction and mitigation.

Olivia studied an Integrated Masters in Natural Sciences at the University of Exeter. This programme covered topics across Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science, fostering Olivia’s interest in climate science and medical science. Her MSci project used simulations to quantify the climate impacts of a hypothetical nuclear war between the USA and Russia, and the consequent attenuation of tropical cyclone activity.

Olivia is applying her interdisciplinary background to research on the association between climate change and violence, with a focus on temperature extremes and long-term trends. Her PhD project is part of the Centre for Net Positive Health and Climate Solutions (Net+) and is supervised by Prof Gesche Huebner, Prof Peter Cox and Dr Frederike Garbe. She is particularly interested in mitigation strategies, and combining historical estimates with climate projections to predict potential outcomes.
