David McNeil is a PhD student hoping to identify the benefits derived from ecosystem services on the Isles of Scilly.
After completing a postgraduate degree in Ecological Economics at the University of Edinburgh, David joined the Centre in October 2011 as an ESF-funded PhD researcher working under the supervision of Dr Tim Taylor, Professor Richard Owen and Professor Fernando Correia.
His research aims to identify the benefits derived from ecosystem services on the Isles of Scilly using methods developed within the National Ecosystem Assessment (NEA 2011) with the goal of creating added value for local business on the islands.
The findings of the NEA highlighted the importance of ‘space and place’ as well as ‘integration and implementation’ considerations within efforts to value the natural environment. This study will examine how these factors can be addressed in practice by applying an interdisciplinary approach whilst accounting for the unique geographical, ecological and socioeconomic characteristics of the Isles of Scilly.
